Round Table Conference on Establishment of Water Quality Surveillance & Management System

Islamabad: 27th May, 2010: Welcoming the WHO, PCSIR, UNICEF, high government officials from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and AJ&K governments on one-day round table conference on water quality management and inspection, the Deputy Chairman ERRA, Lt Gen Muhammad Haroon Aslam congratulated ERRA and UNICEF on holding the round table conference on a national level. He highlighted need for sustainable water quality management efforts. Appreciating the role of UNICEF as an International Partner, he said that after the devastating earthquake of 2005, ERRA had come a long way and while over 4, 000 water schemes were destroyed, nearly 4, 000 have been reconstructed while 805 are under construction. Stressing the need for quality drinking water, he said before the earthquake there was only 1 water-testing laboratory in AJ&K whereas now 8 labs and 9 mini labs are functional which will ensure that people of affected areas get clean drinking water which is necessary for good health. He urged local governments to take ownership of the projects and especially rain water harvesting should be promoted as ERRA’s Rain Water Harvesting project offers better and ensured management for optimal utilization of rain water. He also said that ERRA’s model, if adopted, can provide revolutionary solution to the water shortage problem Pakistan faces today.
