SZABIST - Diploma in Disaster Risk Management (In Collaboration with ERRA)

Major General Asghar Nawaz HI(M))

Chairman, ERRA

I take this opportunity to reach out to all our Development partners, who have been instrumental and a constant source of inspiration and encouragement, in helping us achieve our objective of ‘BUILD BACK BETTER’. It is indeed a privilege for me to join ERRA as its Chairman and to communicate with the esteemed Development Partners, who had been supporting ERRA in rebuilding the lives of the deprived people of the earthquake affected area. ERRA, being a hybrid organization, comprising of dedicated and committed professionals, is endeavouring to accomplish the task of reconstruction and rehabilitation. It is indeed an honour and a rewarding mission to lead such an organization. Over the years, ERRA’s interventions in the earthquake hit areas along with its Development Partners, brought socio-economic improvements and better and safe living standards in the lives of the affected people. The innovated concepts, strategies and procedures enabled ERRA to accomplish most of its objectives in terms of provision of social services and restoration of the Government Institutions.

ERRA’s flagship housing program of reconstructing 5,90,900 earthquake resistant houses provided seismically safe living conditions to the affectees. This major achievement has been amply recognized by the United Nations and awarded ERRA with the UN - SASAKAWA Award. It gives me immense pleasure to share with you the unprecedented support extended by our prestigious Donors and NGOs in completing 97% of the projects in 10 socio-economic sectors. I would also like to share with you that ERRA has successfully completed its water and sanitation programme for providing clean drinking water and improved sanitation conditions. Today, all that ERRA has achieved would not have been possible without the unflinching support and generous contributions by the Donors/ INGOs/ NGOs.

As Chairman ERRA, I consider the reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in the disaster stricken areas of KPK and AJK as a sacred task. I assure you that ERRA’s resolve to accomplish it’s set objectives shall be further strengthened. ERRA is on its way to achieve its objective of Build Back Better and is determined to further facilitate and rehabilitate the deprived communities by conceiving projects in Rain Water Harvesting, Disaster Risk Management and Gender related issues. We are also deeply aware of the fact that health and education are the primary services to be rendered to the communities. To achieve this purpose, ERRA is exploring all possible avenues to ensure the availability of the requisite funds, to complete the remaining projects of Health and Education sectors. I, as Chairman, ERRA, shall endeavour my utmost to steer ERRA to reach new heights of excellence.

I would also like to share with our prestigious Development Partners that after passing of the Act, ERRA has become a permanent organization with its mandate extended throughout Pakistan. We are in the process of sensitizing the government regarding certain minor overlapping issues and procedures which will be addressed soon.

We would look forward to the Donor Agencies and INGO’s/NGO’s for partnership in providing better service delivery in all the socio-economic sectors to the people of the earthquake affected areas.
